Whirlpool dishwasher error codes and troubleshooting

Dishwashers provide a lot of convenience in a household. Dirty dishes and hours spent washing them manually are now a thing of the past. However, if you have a Whirlpool dishwasher and you are experiencing some Whirlpool dishwasher problems, you’re not alone. In this article, we will cover the main error fault codes when your Whirlpool dishwasher isn’t working properly and share some useful tips on how some of these challenges can be addressed. Let’s take a closer look.

Whirlpool dishwasher fault codes

Whether your Whirlpool dishwasher is not draining or it’s another issue that is affecting the functionality of your appliance or not getting your crockery and cutlery clean, you’re very likely to see some Whirlpool dishwasher error codes. Although some of these may differ from model to model, the most common error codes and what their respective meanings are appear below for your convenience.

Error code F1: Temperature sensor

If you see this error code, it’s most likely a temperature sensor issue. In some cases, the water temperature may be too low and fall below minus three degrees Celsius. In other cases, it could be too high above 85 degrees Celsius. In general, the dishwasher will pick up that the water temperature is not right and let you know this by displaying an error code. The most frequently encountered problem here is that your NTC temperature sensor is faulty and could require replacement.

Error code F2: Water leak

If you are wondering what does error code F2/E2 mean on a Whirlpool dishwasher, you’ve come to the right place. In most cases, this means that your dishwasher has detected a leak. Here, you will need to drain the base, find the leak and attend to the necessary repairs. However, another issue may be the fault here and that is that the main control board isn’t getting the correct signal from the user interface. If this is faulty, you may need to have it replaced.

Error code F3: Heating system

In the case of such an error being displayed on your Whirlpool dishwasher, you are dealing with an issue related to the heating system. It may be the case that your dishwasher is either not heating at all or is heating too slowly. Potential causes of this may be a faulty heating element, a faulty temperature sensor or a faulty connection between the appliance’s control board and the heater.

Error code F4: Drainage system

The drainage system ensures that water that goes into your appliance also comes out at the right time. However, with blockages or kinks in your hoses or pipes, you will have drainage issues. To address this fault, you may need to clean or replace your pump or filter. In addition, if your hose is too low, it could also be related to a problem with the optical sensor or the control board.

Error code F5: Rotor blocked

This error code may mean that your dishwasher motor may need to be replaced because the rotor or the moving part is faulty.

Error code F6: The dishwasher is not filling with water

Do you want to know what does error code F6/E6 mean on a Whirlpool dishwasher? It essentially means that the incoming water detected is at the wrong temperature or no incoming water is detected at all even though the water inlet valve is open. As such, it could need replacing. Alternatively, your water inlet hose may be blocked. Alternatively, the flow meter may have encountered a failure.

Error code F7: Flow meter

Error code F7 and F6 are closely related because they both deal with the flow meter. This fault could be caused by a blockage/kink in the water inlet hose, a faulty water inlet valve or as simple as it sounds – a closed water tap.

Error code F8: Water level

This error will appear if the dishwasher detects too much water in it. Such problems can be caused by a filter that is blocked and which prevents the dishwasher from draining properly. In addition, it could be caused by the system that lets water into the appliance. Further challenges could include excessive foaming. Alternatively, you may be dealing with a more complex issue which is a spray pump fault that is caused by a problem with the main wash rotor.

Error code F9: Continuous water inlet

If you see error code F9 on your dishwasher, you are dealing with one of two issues. The first one is that you have a faulty water inlet valve. Meanwhile, the second one is related to a faulty control board, which may need to be replaced.

Error code F0/F10: Sensor failure

This error is related to faulty sensors which do not “speak” to the main control board. It’s highly recommended that you seek out the help of a professional engineer to help you address this issue.

Error code FA: Optical water indicator (turbidity)

This error code appears when the internal sensor senses inaccurate information. For example, if dirty water is detected, a rinse cycle may be repeated. If the sensor is blocked by dirt, this error code will appear. Also, it’s possible that the sensor has detected too much foaming from your detergent and this could also be a possible culprit for the issue in question.

Error code FB: Motorised diverter valve

The diverter valve, which controls the water flow in the upper spray arm, could be faulty. As such, it may need to be replaced.

Error code FC: Water hardness sensor

This error code will monitor water hardness and indicate if you need to add dishwasher salt to address the issue. However, if you have already added such salt to your dishwasher and it still displays this error, your sensor may be faulty and you may need to replace it.
