Technology coming to a kitchen near you

For many people, cooking and baking is already a fun thing to do, but for those people who need something extra to get excited about, there is always the kitchen gadget.
Much of what is produced in technology and gadgetry for kitchens comes and goes, but we’ve put together a list of handy developments in tech that we think you’ll be seeing in more and more kitchens over the coming years.

Fridge Camera

We’ve all been there, wandering around the supermarket and wondering what to make for dinner – only to find yourself unable to recall what you already have in. Do you need more vegetables for a stir fry? Do you already have sausages? Previously, if no one was in back at home, you’d have to take your chances, sometimes ending up with too many ingredients and other times lacking what you really need.

Now there’s the fridge camera. It seems like a strange place to put a camera at first, but imagine being able to take a peek in your fridge from the supermarket aisle. You can shop more accurately and produce less waste – all of which saves you money.

Hob Cooking Zones

Induction hob tops are a fairly recent development, but how about a hob that responds to the size of your pans? Even more energy efficient, these hob tops will only apply heat to the bottom of your pan instead of, potentially, wasting heat. Small pans and woks will get a smaller circle of heat than your large pan of pasta, and it does it all by itself.

Smart Gardens

Keeping fresh herbs on hand at all times, allowing you to create the best tasting meals, is difficult. Those clutches of herbs you buy from the supermarket at great on the day, but will have wilted and begun to rot a day or so later.

Enter the smart garden. A small tub which can monitor, water and provide sunlight for freshly planted herbs. This way you can grow your own herbs constantly so they’re always fresh and ready to use – especially if you haven’t got time for green-fingered pursuits.

Smart Scales

At first, tethering a scale to your smartphone or tablet might seem a bit frivolous, but aside from a nice display when you’re weighing out items, there is the option to tell it what you’re weighing for different recipes. If you put too much of one thing in, it will adjust the recipe to tell you how much more you need of other ingredients – handy if you’re seeking perfect Yorkshire puds.

Smart Sous-vide

You’ve heard of a sous-chef, but did you know you could be your very own sous-chef? Sous-vide is the art of cooking your food slowly in water but vacuum-sealed in a bag. This is controlled, precision cooking over longer periods and can now be made smarter.

The water keeps your meat and vegetables cool until the time which you’ve set via your smartphone – you can even select how you’d like it cooked (well done, crispy etc.) and what time you’d like it to be ready. Plus, it looks space-age, like something they’d have in Aunt Beru’s kitchen in Star Wars.
