When it comes to equipping your kitchen, you should focus on quality and really try and get the basics right. This way, you build a strong foundation for your kitchen going forward.
This article discusses some of the must-have items for the modern kitchen.
1. A Good Selection of Knives
No kitchen could be complete without a good set of knives – they exude class and show that you are serious about your food preparation.
A few notes for selecting the right knife for the job:
- Serated Edge Knives – these knives are ideal for bread and things with a tough skin (such as sausages).
- Straight Edge Knives – These are ideal for cutting raw meat and slicing fish efficiently. The smaller knives are also great options for chopping veg.
It is worth remembering that, when it comes to knives, you get what you pay for. If you don’t know much about knives, it may be worth buying a chefs set to get you started and reading up about which knives are suitable for certain jobs.
2. An Extensive Pan Collection
If you have a varied diet as you should, you will most likely need to have quite a wide selection of pots and pans for different types of cooking.
Heavier, cast-iron pans will generally last longer and just feel better! As with knives, we’d recommend that you start off by buying a pre-packaged kit.
We’d suggest that you should aim to have the following as a minimum:
- 2 frying pans
- A griddle pan
- A wok
- Saucepans of a variety of sizes
3. A Good Food Processor
Food processors can quickly become one of the staple items of a kitchen once you have realised how much easier they make your life. They are ideal for chopping vegetables quickly and efficiently and they don’t have to cost the earth.
4. A Blender
Blenders are the BFF of the breakfast meal. We all know that we need to be eating more fruit and veg, but it can be difficult to fit them in with our busy lives. A blender offers the perfect solution, with the ability to liquidise fruit and make delicious smoothies to have with your breakfast.
You can also make fantastic cocktails with them… But we didn’t tell you that!
5. A French Press
If you want to add a touch of class to your life and some luxury for your breakfast times, we suggest getting a French Press for your coffee.
A French Press will give you all of the convenience of instant coffee but with a much richer taste due to the real beans that go into it.
6. A Well-Stocked Spice Rack
Spices add flavour to your food and allow you to turn what would be a boring, plain meal into a taste extravaganza. Having a decent spice rack will be sure to impress guests and will pay dividends in the quality of your meals going forward.
We recommend paying a little extra to get a spice rack that fits in with your stylish kitchen or, better yet, fits into an unused bit of cupboard space.
