How to Clean Your Washing Machine

Whether you’ve just bought a washing machine or have had yours a while, washing it regularly will keep it running smoothly and keep it cleaning your clothes efficiently. But how do you clean it?

Luckily, your friendly appliance repair company, Domex, have put together this quick guide which will help you understand how to clean your washing machine.

What You’ll Need

  • Some bleach
  • White Vinegar
  • A cloth/rag
  • An old toothbrush

Step by Step: How to Clean Your Washing Machine

1.      Check the washing machine is empty

This is hopefully pretty obvious, but some people do forget to empty their machine before they wash it. Don’t be that guy/girl!

2.      Add approximately 2 cups of bleach to the powder drawer

Make sure you add the bleach to the right place! The bleach will help to clear up the build-up of unused washing powders, liquids etc. that settle in the bottom of your machine over time.

3.      Making sure the machine is empty, run it on a hot wash

This will circulate the bleach that we’ve just put into the powder draw and cut through the gunk in the bottom of the machine and it will kill any bacteria present.

4.      Add two cups of white vinegar to the powder drawer, run on a 40 degree cycle

The bleach will have done a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to cleaning your machine, but the white vinegar will just remove any leftover odours.

5.      Remove the powder drawer and soak for 15 minutes in hot water and bleach

Take out the powder drawer and soak it for 15 minutes in your sink with hot water and one cup of bleach.

6.      Dampen a cloth in the bleach water and wipe the seals

Time to multi-task! While your powder drawer is soaking, use the water it’s soaking in to dampen a cloth and then wipe around the seals of the washing machine door.

7.      Wipe where the powder drawer would usually go

Using the same cloth (maybe re-dampen it first!), wipe where the powder drawer was previously. This will just clear out any of the excess residue. Use the old toothbrush to remove any stubborn stains around the powder drawer.

8.      Dry the powder draw and put it back into the machine

Take the powder drawer out of the water and leave it to dry. Once it has dried out fully, put it back into the machine.

9.      Unclog the filter and become rich (hopefully)

Open up the filter (usually located on the front base of the machine) and remove any fluff, dirt or (hopefully) coins.

And hey presto! You now have a clean washing machine that will keep your clothes fresh! Washing your machine regularly will also stop the parts disintegrating over time.
