FAQs – Out of Warranty Repairs

manufacturer warrantyMost of the appliances in your home will have come with a manufacturers warranty if it was bought new. These are designed to protect you from any basic faults, allowing you to send the appliance away for repair or replacement for free if anything goes wrong. However, these warranties don’t last forever, and some can last as little as a year. If you’re lucky, you’ll never need to use your warranty, but it’s often the case that when you do, the warranty will have run out anyway.

In this situation, you might have a few questions about what you should do and who you should look to, which is why we’ve got the answers to a few of our most frequently asked questions when the warranty on an appliance has expired.

How will I know if I'm being ripped off?

The first thing to remember is that, unless you work in the industry, you may never know if you’re paying too high a price for your repairs. However, this is why DASA members are recommended, as you will at least know they are applying the same pricing across the board – usually charging less than most ordinary non-DASA members.

When will I pay for the work done?

Most of the time you will be expected to pay once the work is finished, this removes the need for unnecessary letters and bills to be sent. Of course, if you’ve arranged something different with the company themselves prior to the work, you will be expected to uphold whatever agreement you have in place.

How do I know I can trust a repair company?

There are plenty of shady repair companies and electricians out there, make no mistake. However, there is one way you can identify a quality appliance repair company: by seeking out a DASA (Domestic Appliance Service Association) member.

A company can only be a DASA member if their team and their services are up to standard. This way, you know you’re having your appliance repaired by someone you can trust. Additionally, DASA members will also have specific knowledge of working with branded appliances, giving them the edge over a standard electrician or plumber.

Often, people find they are charged less by a DASA member than a standard repair company.

I have a friend who has said they can repair my appliance, should I let them do the work?

Allowing a friend – or a friend-of-a-friend – to do the work, can often seem like the simplest of solutions. But whether it’s a trade for a cup of tea or some cash in hand, this is generally a bad idea.

You have to stop and ask yourself how qualified this person is. Even if you think they have a basic understanding of electrics, it’s unlikely that they deal with appliances day in day out. With high voltages and dangerous gases posing a risk on most appliances, it isn’t worth letting someone “tinker” with your appliance as they may make things worse – they could even cause you, themselves and your property serious damage. In the long run, you need someone safe and experienced to carry out this kind of work.

When your warranty has run out on your appliance, don’t risk your safety or your appliance by bringing in someone who you can’t fully trust. At Domex, we’re a DASA member, giving you peace of mind should your washing machine, cooker, fridge, freezer or dishwasher breakdown outside of its warranty.
