Plenty of towels, oven gloves and placemats will need washing, and there is always someone who spills their drink or splashes their gravy. All of this means your washing machine needs to be ready to go at the drop of a hat (or glass).
Clean out your filter for a more effective clean and give the rubber seal on rim of the drum and door a wipe, ensuring your wash isn’t tainted with old muck and hair. If you use a detergent drawer, pop it out and give it a good scrub, and finally, run an empty drum on a hot wash with a store-bought cleaning tablet for a deep cleanse.
Keeping everything fresh and ready to deploy over the festive period, the fridge is key to your prep work. Start by clearing out old and out of date items to make as much room as possible.
Before you fill the fridge again though, give it a thorough clean. Tackle sticky patches and clear out the drain at the back. If you need to, now is a good time to adjust shelves to fit the turkey in.
The secondary place for stocking up, your freezer will house the nibbles and desserts at this time of the year.
It’s tempting to try and cram everything in at once, but do yourself a favour and defrost your freezer before your big Christmas food shop - you never know if your guests will bring items for freezing and you’ll be glad of the extra space. Also, if your freezer is under a counter, pull it out (carefully!) and clean behind the appliance for good measure.
How would you get on at Christmas without your oven? Probably not very well. Whether it’s baking Christmas cookies with the kids or basting the turkey, this time of year is the ultimate test for your oven.
The first thing to do is give your oven a deep clean, we’re talking all the nooks and crannies and all the grease and burnt on grime, allowing your Christmas dinner to cook in the purest possible fashion. Double check that all the functions you need are working too; you don’t want to find out Christmas morning that one of your hob rings doesn’t work.
At the end of Christmas day, you’ll never be more thankful to an appliance than you are to your dishwasher. Avoid the chores, put on some Christmas television and tuck into some chocolates.
The best way to ensure your dishwasher is running properly for Christmas is to carry out a preemptive clean. Some will have a self-clean function, others will require a hot wash with a tablet on empty. Clean out the filter at the bottom of the appliance too, ensuring nothing is blocking it.
A kitchen steamed up with heat from all your boiling vegetables and cooking party food isn’t pleasant, so make sure your extractor hood is ready for the job of clearing the air this year.
One of the best things you can do for your extractor hood is to clean out the filter. Simply remove the filter panels and clean any grease or dust. This will ensure as much hot, steamy air can be pulled up through the extractor as possible.
