How to Use A Dryer with the Least Damage to Clothes

Using an electric dryer is a great modern day convenience that simplifies and speeds up our laundry process.  No longer is it necessary to trek out to the clothesline outside and dry all of our items in batches.  You also do not have to worry about taking in the clothes in case it starts raining or checking for bugs that might have made their way onto your clothing.  Some communities do not even allow laundry lines to be hung outside anymore.  Also, in places that experience cold weather, outside clothes drying is not an option.  Instead, people must find various locations around the house where they can hand their clothes to dry.

However, along with all of the benefits, dryers can also have their downsides as well.  A clothes dryer, if not used properly can be a fire hazard.  It also uses a lot of electricity and can do damage to clothes, causing them to deteriorate faster than traditional line drying.  However, by learning a little bit about how these appliances work and using the tips explained below, you can be sure to minimize any harm that using them can cause.

In order to keep your clothes in their best shape it is essential to makes sure that your dryer is working optimally.  Therefore, maintenance to your appliance is a large part in preventing damage to your laundry.  You should get your machine serviced every so often, even if it seems to be working fine.  The reason for this is that it could be running too hot or can be jostling the clothes more than is necessary.  Obviously, if you notice a problem, you should have a professional check it out sooner, but it is always better to fix problems when they are small and have not yet caused too much damage to your clothes.

The other two tips are things that people can easily do themselves.  The first is making sure to clean the lint trap each time the appliance is used.  This not only prevents fires, but also helps keep your machine running at its best and most consistent temperature.  This will go a long way in preserving your clothes.  As excessive heat is more likely to harm your laundry, the most common sense thing to do is dry your clothes on the lowest setting possible.  This will ensure that elastics will not break down as easily and that the fibres will remain intact.  With these few simple steps you can use your dryer with the least damage possible to your clothing.
